God Still Came

I was reading about Adam and Eve this past week and was hit with a profound revelation I had never saw before in all my years of reading their story. It started with this verse in Genesis chapter 3

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Genesis 3:6‭-‬13

Genesis 3:6-13

Do you see it??

God knew they had eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but He still came to walk in the garden with them!! He still came and took the first steps toward them. It was Adam and Eve who hid from God and ran away from Him, not the other way around.

That realization left me awe struck! Even then He proved how much He loves us even at our worst and desires to be with us. US!!

Then another realization hit me. God's approach was such a relational one! He didn't march into the garden in an angry tirade pointing his finger in their noses and telling them how disappointed He was they couldn't even follow ONE command. Instead He came and gave them each opportunity to have a conversation with Him and own their own choices.

God must have been so sad that neither Eve nor Adam gave Him the opportunity to forgive. Yes, the opportunity!! God made us humans with free will which means we can choose to have a relationship with Him or not. It is not forced which is why He didn't shame Adam and Eve or force them to confess or change but He still had to be true to Himself and let the consequences be done.

He started with asking Adam (not Eve) where He was. Why just Adam? Think about it. Adam is a representation of leadership. Eve might have got caught in a conversation with Satan but Adam stood by and let Eve be beguiled by Satan. He chose not to protect Eve and disobey God alongside her. The woman was made from man and by God's own design, Adam held the greater responsibility to protect and lead in the relationship (as do all men).

I don't know about you, but I have a new perspective on that story. No longer do I read it and shake my head at Adam and Eve. Instead I am drawn to the love of God that still came despite every reason not to. It just goes beyond what I can fathom!
