Go Light Your World

“There is a candle in every soul,

Some brightly burning, some dark and cold”

For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
— Psalms 18:28
Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
— Psalms 24:19-20

The past year and a half has sometimes been a battle to keep my candle burning bright. Many times I have wanted to run and hide my candle lest a nasty person see it and be attracted to its light because they see another voice they can snuff out with their foul breath of hatred and lies.

Running to the darkness is NOT my first reaction. But an interesting shift happened when I heard the song “Go Light Your World” by Chris Rice. It breathed fresh power into my candle’s flame. It shifted my perspective from being afraid of my light being snuffed out to how I could use that same blaze to go light my world.

And that is when I realized a powerful conviction. If I as a Christian I can’t hold up my light with the power and authority of Jesus Christ the candle lighter, then what does that tell others? What kind of hypocrisy is that?

It’s also when I realized I have two choices. I can either let the LORD my God enlighten my darkness or I can let my candle be put out alongside the wicked. I can complain about the darkness or I can see how I have contributed to it any time I have chosen to hide my candle behind the doors of a church, or being a “peacemaker”, or fear or whatever sounds justifiable at the time.

Here’s the thing though, silence doesn’t equal immunity. Hiding my candle doesn’t guarantee safety.  But it most certainly spells disobedience.

Jesus’ last command before ascending into heaven was “Go and Make Disciples” and how I can I do that if I am refusing to let my light shine? How can I be obedient if I am not allowing God to light MY candle? The Bible says,

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path
— Psalms 119:105

Why would I not want others who are walking in darkness to be brought to the light?

I have made my choice! I will not let my candle go to waste. I will not sit by and let the wick be dark and cold. I want God to keep my candle brightly burning so I can go light my world with his love and truth.

Will join me and go light your world?
