Thursday Tippity Tip: Strategies for Fitting Into a Relationship

God didn’t create you a unique person so you could pretend to be someone else
— Erin P

Have you ever observed a mosaic artist at work? They take uniquely shaped pieces and fit them together in a one-of-a-kind piece.

Relationships are a lot like a mosaic puzzle. As you maneuver through life, it can easy to wish you were shaped and curved differently when the unique edges of you don’t align with the unique edges in others. It is easy to fall into the trap of changing who you are (thereby pretending to be someone you are not) just so you don’t have to deal with the uncomfortable feeling of not “fitting” in a relationship you want to keep or think you need.

These two strategies below are a good start to helping you remain authentic while finding the relationships you were meant to fit.

1. Shift the edges around and adjust the angle of approach. What I mean by this is, check your communication, listen with the intent to love the other person better. Be flexible enough to grow and change some habits or ways of relating you know could improve while also remaining authentic to the core person God created you to be. It could just be a miss communication, or a matter of perspective that if altered (should it be something you can or should alter), would make all the difference.

2. If after trying to align all sides and your edges simply aren’t working together, be okay with not connecting. God doesn’t want any of us unequally yoked in any relationship. Not fitting with a person doesn’t mean you won’t fit with anybody else; it simply means, your unique design wasn’t created by God to fit with theirs and that is 100% OKAY. Don’t force what God didn’t intend. You will only end up miserable and miss out on the relationships God did intend for you to fit.
